KELTON, John

John Kelton, 54, of Cedaredge, passed away suddenly on Saturday, Feb. 18. He was born in Denver on Sept. 13, 1957, to Jack and Lois Kelton. He spent his early years in Steamboat Springs and Loveland with his younger siblings Ginger, Susan and Jeff. He graduated from Loveland High School in 1975 and went on to work in the mines in Leadville. Later, Kelton served for several years as a police officer for the Leadville Police Department On August 20, 1986, he married Cassandra Lee Ossel, his very best friend. It is said that day began a true partnership in love, friendship and work. Before settling in Cedaredge, the couple lived in Silt and Edwards. In late 1995, they opened Cedaredge Tire and Auto and as a team specialized in tire sales and oil changes and friendship. A visit to the tire store always included greetings by Kelton’s beloved dogs, first Kodi and Sami, and more recently Tug Boat and Bailey, and a story or two by Kelton. It is said that before a customer left, Kelton could usually get a smile or laugh out of the customer with some of his dry wit. During his time away from the business, John and Cassandra Kelton loved to scuba dive and took several vacations in Cozumel and surrounding beaches. Kelton also loved four wheeling and spending time with his dogs. He also is said to have enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and loved to tease and spin his stories on life. He is survived by his wife, Cassandra Kelton, Cedaredge; sister Susan Smith, Grand Junction; brother Jeff Kelton, Aurora; nephews Josh and Chris MacQuoid, Grand Junction, and Jordan (Brittany) Gillespie with their children Lexie and Mason Gillespie, Goldsboro, N.C. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Lois Kelton, and his sister, Ginger Gillespie. A memorial service will be held at the Stolte Shed on Thursday, Feb. 23, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Kelton’s memory may be made to Cedaredge Animal Shelter.
