FELLERS, Ruth E.

Ruth E. Fellers passed away on March 29, in Des Moines, Iowa. She was born on Jan. 8, 1928, in Del Norte to Helen and Lyle Slonecker. She graduated from Leadville High School in 1945, received an associate of arts degree from Colorado Women’s College and a bachelor of science from Colorado State University in 1949. She began her teaching career as an English teacher in Alamosa Public Schools. She married Marvin Fellers on Dec. 26, 1949. She moved to Des Moines in 1955 and began her teaching career there in 1965. She taught in many different elementary schools in Des Moines and served as a consultant to the gifted/talented program until she retired in 1993. While teaching, she earned her master of science in education at Drake University and did additional graduate work at various other institutions. She was a member of Iowa Retired School Personnel (she served as co-president); Des Moines Area Retired School Personnel (co-president); ACEI (international vice president); Delta Kappa Gamma (state and local president); Phi Delta Kappa (state and local president and regional director of Iowa); Kappa Kappa Iota (state and local president), PEO (Chapter KM); Des Moines Women’s Club and Grace United Methodist Church. She was survived by her husband, Marvin Fellers; children, Julie Fellers (Larry) Hook and Jack (Patti) Fellers; grandchildren Karen (Steve) Case, Gail Hook, and Michael, David and Anelise Fellers; brother Robert (Marilyn) Slonecker; sister Rosalie Templeton and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. A celebration of her life was held on April 2 in Des Moines. 2012
