Helen was born July 18, 1911 in Portland, Oregon to Andrew Jackson Berry, III and Helen George (Coffman). At age 4, the family moved to a small farm outside Las Animas, CO. She graduated from high school in 1928 and attended Colorado Teachers College in Greeley. Helen taught in a one-room schoolhouse from 1929-1931. In 1931, Helen married Hugh D. Walker, Jr. in La Junta, CO and together they raised four children. In 1942, she began her Civil Service career at La Junta Air Field, transferring to the Pueblo Army Depot in 1951. When the family moved to Colorado Springs in 1955, Helen began working at Peterson Field retiring in 1977 as a supervisor in Base Supply Document Control. Granny, as she was lovingly called, had many passions which included raising her beloved Boston Terriers, her beautiful iris gardens, crocheting, cooking, and making her delicious jams and jellie.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, her daughters Virginia Smith and Carol Walker, her brother Andrew Jackson "Jack" Berry IV, and her sister Dorothy Morrow. Granny will be GREATLY missed by her children Donald Walker (Linda) and Helen Walker; grandchildren Catherine Martinez (George), Jay Smith, and Cameron Walker; great-grand children Bobby Martinez (Darlene), Adam Smith, and David Martinez (Richelle Rodriguez); great-great grandchildren Antonio Vallejos (Nikki), Adriana Martinez and Damian Martinez.
