March 29, 1898 SPECIAL ORDER NO. 1 1st Again we are called to mourn the loss of a loved and honored member of this Post; whose term of enlistment having expired, death has furnished an honorable discharge from all earthly duties and responsibilities. “They are falling one by one.” 2d Comrade Jacob Sipe was born in Miami Co., O., on March 10th 1834, moved to Iowa when a boy, crossed the plains to Colorado in 1859, and for a time engaged in mining, and when he realized the was coming returned to Iowa, where he enlisted in Co. D, Fifth Iowa Inf. on June 24th, 1861, and was discharged August 18th, 1865, on close of the war; having faithfully served his country for a period of four years and two months. He was wounded in the leg at the battle of Iuka, Miss., on Sept. 19, 1862. 3d Comrade Sipe was married to Rebecca Bowles at Marshalltown, Iowa, March 22, 1869, who, with three children survive him, and who have the warm sympathy of all members of this Post. The family moved to Colorado in 1878 and settled in Longmont.
