Five-Year Old Child Killed
Charles Richard Smith, little five-year-old son of L. Vane Smith, a farmer living near St. Vrain station, was killed Saturday when a wagon loaded with grain ran over him.
The little boy has made his home with his aunt, Mrs. J. J. Harty, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, since the death of his mother four years ago but was spending the summer with his father.
Mr. Smith had loaded the wagon with wheat and driven to the station and as he started on a wheel dropped into a rut, throwing both man and child to the ground. This frightened the horses and they cramped the wagon starting to run and the wagon passed over the child’s body just above the hips and over Mr. Smith’s leg.
The little boy was hurried to the hospital by Wilson Stewart who saw the accident and X-rays were taken which showed that one hip was broken as well as dislocated in the little boy but no bones broken in Mr. Smith’s leg.
Internal hemorrage developed in the child soon after arriving at the hospital and he died at 1:45.
