OLD CONFEDERATE MURDERED
No Motive Can Be Found for the Mysterious Assault
DENVER--Believed to have been the victim of an assault and robbery committed by strangers for whom the police are now seeking, Maurice Hudson, an aged Confederate soldier, was found unconscious in the basement of the La Shell hotel and died in the county hospital as a result of a bullet wound in the right temple.
All indications point to one of the most mysterious and baffling murder mysteries the police of the city have ever been called upon to unravel, but thus far no progress has been made the police department in its search for the perpetrators of the deed, and as a result an effort has been made to suppress the case from the public.
One feature of the case which, more than anything else, throws a shroud of mystery about the murder, is the fact that none of the roomers or boarders in the hotel heard the pistol shot or saw the man assaulted, so far as could be learned.
Roomers at the hotel claim that during the past week or two they have seen Hudson in the company of strange men of late. Recently, also, the guests of the hotel say, these same strange men have been in the habit of visiting with Hudson in his room at all hours of the day and night. It is said on good authority that two strange men were with him the last time he was seen before found unconscious.
