TALKINGTON, Frank W.


Frank W. Talkington, long time Chaffee County resident, died Jan. 11, 2007, at Columbine Manor Care Center after a long battle against cancer. He was the second son born to Franklin William Talkington and Mabel Pauline (Drinkwater) Talkington, Feb. 21, 1915, in Cedar Point, Kan. When he was 12 his family moved to eastern Colorado. He met his future bride in Trinchera. From 1932-38 he worked for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fé Railroad as a machine operator. June 5, 1938, he married Viola Virginia Chaney. They were married 68 years. Mr. Talkington and Viola moved to Pueblo in 1938 and he worked at the open-hearth at CF&I. There a daughter was born. In 1947 they moved to Cañon City where he engaged in vegetable farming until 1951 when they moved to near Salida where their second child, a son, was born. He became a partner in a ranching operation in Missouri Park until 1971. They moved into town and he worked for Chaffee County Road and Bridge Department for eight years until he retired. He enjoyed trapping, hunting and his favorite - fly fishing. He enjoyed making people laugh and in turn enjoyed a good laugh. He never met a stranger. His outlook was positive. Survivors are his wife, Viola Talkington of Salida; daughter, Barbara (Phil) Coulter of Olathe; son, Leonard (Shirley) Talkington of Olney Springs; five grandchildren and their spouses; 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jim Talkington and sisters Hazel McDonald and Marion Burdette. Services are set for 10 a.m. Jan. 15, 2007, at United Methodist Church, Salida. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery, Montrose. In lieu of flowers, friends who desire may make memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, United Methodist Church or Columbine Manor Care Center through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home, Salida.
