Dr. Herman Graves
Dr. Herman C. Graves of 40 University Drive died Monday, Nov 12 at Eventide Nursing Home following an extended illness. He was 80.
Born in Chicago, Ill. In 1893, Dr. Graves graduated from the University of Colorado in 1917 and from the CU Medical School in 1919. He did postgraduate work at Harvard in 1931. Dr. Graves practiced medicine in Canon City from 1919 to 1934 when he moved to Grand Junction where he continued his practice until 1970. He retired from practice at that time and moved to Longmont in 1972. In 1967 he was recognized at the University of Colorado on his 50-year reunion and again in 1970 for practicing medicine for 50 years. He received the Noland Award from CU in 1957 as a most valuable alumnus. Dr. Graves had married Alma Keehn Graves in Denver in 1919. He remarried following his first wife’s death in 1963 to Rose J. Graves in Grand Junction in 1965.
Dr. Graves was a member of the Episcopal Church of Grand Junction, of the board of Directors of the Arthritis Foundation of Denver, Sigma Nu Fraternity, the Phi Alpha Rho Medical Fraternity, Masonic Lodge 173 of Grand Junction, the BPOE Elks Lodge 575 of Grand Junction and was the past president of both the Grand Junction Rotary Club and of the Mesa County Medial Society.
Survivors include his wife, as step-son, Roger Billings of Farmington, NM, a step-daughter, Mrs. Fred (Phyllis) Pahke of Longmont, two daughters, Mrs R.T. (Barbara) Couley of Denver and Mrs. William C. (Alma) Kurtz Jr. of Englewood, seven grand-children and seven step-grandchildren.
Services will be held Wednesday, at 10 a.m. at the First Congregational Church with Rev Teryl Schwietzer officiating. Cremation is to precede the service. Friends are asked to contribute to the charity of their choice and may call at the Howe Mortuary prior to the services.
