James (Jim) L. Atwood, 79, of Canon City, passed away suddenly on Dec.
24 in Canon City.
He was born on April 21, 1930, in Lamar, to the late Harry and Margaret
(Gilbert) Atwood. His family moved to Fremont County while he was an
infant, and he grew up in the area. He married Elaine Largent of Lamar
on August 17, 1949, in Clayton, N.M.
Atwood worked for 16 years at the Climax Molybdenum Mine. Following
that, he worked for 18 years for the federal Mine Safety and Health
Administration as a special investigator. After retiring in 1993, he and
his wife returned to live in Canon City.
He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, and was a
member of several outdoor organizations. He had many hobbies, including
gardening, woodworking, beekeeping, and jewelry making. He loved animals
and raised livestock of all kinds for many years. Above all he enjoyed
spending time with his family.
Atwood is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elaine; five children, Judy
(Ron) Dobson of Salida, Janis (Danny) Bond of Wheat Ridge, Jim (Sheryl)
Atwood of Buena Vista, Jon (Lynda) Atwood of Canon City and Jean Atwood
of Englewood; 13 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and nine
siblings, R. W. Atwood of Mesa, Ariz., Harry Atwood of Canon City,
Eunice (Russell) Berry of Hillside, Annie (Jerry) Wood of Canon City,
CO, Karen (Fred) Javernick of Canon City, Tom (DeVera) Atwood of
Penrose, Nancy (Gene) Wininger of Canon City, Alita (Jack) Jaqua of
Sarasota, Fla., and Aaron (Mona) Atwood of Canon City.
He was also preceded in death by three siblings, Phillip Atwood, Bettye
Dansby and Barbara Long. Memorial Services were held on Tuesday, Dec.
29, at Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor John McDonald officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Calvary Christian School,
1415 Elm Avenue, Canon City, CO 81212. Inurnment will be at a later
date. Arrangements handled by Wilson Funeral Home.
