SAMUEL V. NEWELL DIES IN CALIFORNIA

Samuel V. Newell, once prominent citizen of Gilpin county, died at Bonsal, Calif., last Thursday. He was 64 years old and was known thruout the state.
Mr. Newell was a pioneer of Gilpin county, coming here in 1872 and engaging in the lumber business. He served as alderman and mayor in Central City several terms in the early days. In 1884 he was elected representative, and 1886 state senator. During the administration of Benjamin Harrison he was appointed by him receiver for the United States land office, then located in this city, which position he held until the offices were moved to Denver. He was a member of the banking house of John Mellor & Co., doing business here thirty years ago, and filled the position of cashier. He was largely interested in mining and fortune seemed to smile upon him, but reverses came after his entry in politics. He left Gilpin county a few years ago for Goldfield, Nev., in the hopes of regaining his fortune. He is survived by his third wife, living in California, and a Son by his first wife, Bert Newell, of Denver.
