PENASA,
Charles
KILLED IN THE HUGHES MINE.
[1911 Feb 11 Gilpin Observer, Central City, CO, P1 C2]
———
Charles Penasa, a middle aged man of Austrian birth, was blasted in the Hughes mine in Russell Gulch yesterday
morning at 8 o'clock, a short time after he went on shift. The manner in which the man met his death is not known as
he was in the level alone. Richard Hughes, who is operating the property, was in the shaft building and was attracted
to the level by the noise of an explosion. When he reached the point where the man was supposed to be at work, he
found the lifeless body. The head had been blown from the shoulders. The body was not mutilated.
Coroner Hamllik was summoned and concluded that no inquest was necessary.
Penasa was a resident of Russell Gulch for 20 years. He was married and had one child. He was a member of the
Eagles, Foresters, Columbus and Alpina societies. The funeral will be held Saturday morning. Complete
arrangements had not been made at the time of going to press, so the hour or place is not known.
