Murrill Roberts, 85, collapsed and passed away while shoveling snow at home in Evergreen, Jan. 5.
Roberts was born on March 8, 1921, in Leadville where he grew up. His parents were the late John and Bertha (Murrill) Roberts.
After graduating from high school in Leadville, Murrill went on to receive a degree in business from the University of Colorado in Boulder. Murrill then served in the Army and Air Force reserves for a total of six years. He worked for General Electric in Portland, Ore., and for the postal service in both Portland and Leadville. Roberts then became an electrician at the Climax Molybdenum Mine and worked there for the next 26 years.
Roberts married the former Alice V. Nielsen in 1972, and they lived at the Homestake Trout Club in Leadville until 1998 when they moved to Evergreen.
A life-long member of the Elks Lodge in Leadville, Roberts’ interests were many. He loved prospecting, hiking, jeeping, fishing, skiing and bowling. He was always interested in life, people and sharing his many interesting mining stories with his friends. After moving from Leadville, Roberts enjoyed his many trips back there and visiting his various mining areas.
Roberts was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Jack and Harold. Jack Roberts was killed in action during the second world war in 1945. Harold “Hi” Roberts passed away in 1999.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years in Evergreen; sister-in-law Joy Roberts; and niece and nephew, Dawn Mackey and Barry Roberts, all in California.
Graveside services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 9, at 1 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Leadville. Pastor Russell Baker officiated with committal services by the officers of the Leadville B.P.O.E. Lodge #236. Pallbearers were Mike and Ed Nielsen, Bob and Joey Roeder, Frank Sadar and Fred Slifka.
Following services, the family received friends at a reception hosted by the Elks Lodge.
Arrangements were handled by Bailey Funeral Home.
