CLOTWORTHY, Walter Carson

Walter Carson “Walt” Clotworthy died Tuesday, Oct. 10, at Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, Mo. He was 83 years old. Clotworthy was born in Longmont, on March 20, 1923. His parents were the late Walter Samuel and Ellenor Elizabeth (Brown) Clotworthy. Clotworthy served in the United States Air Force in the China, Burma, India Theater during World War II. He married the former Margaret “Marge” Helen Dunfee and together they had three children. Clotworthy was a self-employed rancher all his life. He was a 35-year member of the 1st United Presbyterian Church in Leadville, and after moving to Ordway, several years ago, became a member of the United Methodist Church there. He belonged to Elks Lodge #492 in Ouray, served on the Soil Conservation Board and the ASCA Board and was the deputy water commissioner for Division 2 Water District in Colorado. The Clotworthys had just moved to St. Joseph, Mo., in June of 2006 to be near family. To say Clotworthy was a “colorful character” would be an understatement. There are few who knew him who couldn’t come up with a humorous story to tell about him. He was an extremely friendly and easy-going man who was a very good husband, father and friend. Clotworthy was preceded in death by his parents and his granddaughter, April Annell Clotworthy. He is survived by his wife in St. Joseph, Mo.; two sons, James (Diane) Clotworthy of Price, Utah, and Robert (Sherrie) Clotworthy of Spring Creek, Nev.; daughter, Annell M. (Winston) Cocke and of St. Joseph, Mo.; sister Jo Ellen McKinney, of Norwood; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. According to his wishes, Clotworthy was cremated, and his family is planning a memorial service in Colorado in the spring.
