May 24, 2007 Kevin L. Schackelford KEVIN L. SHACKELFORD, 41 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Kevin L. Shackelford of Colorado Springs, Colo., died Saturday, May 19, 2007, of a massive heart attack. Born Oct. 2, 1965, in Rockford, Ill., the son of Darrell and Jeannette McQuay Shackelford. He married Pauline Abernathy Dec. 7, 1985, in Rockford. Kevin was retired from the U.S. Army June 1, 2006, after 20 years of service. Base assignments included Ft. Benning, Ga., Ft. Drum, N.Y., Ft. Carson, Colo., Ft. Richardson, Alaska, Ft. Wainwright, Alaska, Camp Red Cloud, Korea and Balad, Iraq. Mission duties included, Honduras, Thailand, California, Arizona, Arkansas, New York, Fort Knox, Kuwait, Louisiana and Texas. Kevin was currently self employed as the owner of Shackelford's Maintenance Company. He also enjoyed buying and selling homes. Survived by his wife, Pauline (Abernathy) Shackelford; his son, Hunter Shackelford, 17; and his daughter, Haley Shackelford, 16; parents, Darrell and Jeanette Shackelford; sisters and brother, Jequetta (Greg) Surufka, Renee (Dave) Johnson, Nathan (Shayne) Shackelford; mother-in-law, Beulah Abernathy; brothers-in-law, Steve (Vickie) Abernathy, Brian (Sue) Abernathy and Denny (Monica) Abernathy; nieces and nephews, Sara, Doug, Eric, Adam, Donavan, Zane, Tristen, Jason, Jonathon, Bing, Stephanie, Kent, Danielle, Jessica, Nicole and Miranda; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Lawrence and Audrey McQuay; paternal grandfather, Burley Shackelford and paternal grandmother, Marie Bradshaw; father-in-law, Don Abernathy; aunt, Juanita McFadden and uncle, Lester Manning. The visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 25, in Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Road. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Kevin had a short time on earth but made a huge impact in life with everyone he met. He was not someone you just met, he was someone you experienced.
